I am writing concerning The Washington Post’s recent reporting that National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and NSC staff have been using personal, unsecure Gmail email accounts “for highly-technical conversations with colleagues at other government agencies involving sensitive military positions and powerful weapons systems relating to an ongoing conflict.”
This, after last week’s revelation that the military strike in Yemen was planned and discussed on an unsecure Signal chat using unsecure personal phones, is shocking.
Now we find out there have been at least 20 similar Signal chats involving classified information on unsecured, personal cell phones.
At this point it begs the question of whether anyone involved in these emails and Signal conversations cares one iota about our national security. Our enemies’ intelligence services don’t have to work very hard—we’re handing them all our state secrets and military plans on a silver platter
Sharing operational plans on unclassified systems puts our military at risk. Unless something is done to correct this behavior, quickly and decisively, these intentional lapses of security will continue to occur.
At the very least, Michael Waltz should be removed from his post and prosecuted. Ideally, everyone involved in these breaches should be removed as well, as they knowingly participated in these illegal, unsecure proceedings.
We implore you to hold these people accountable for their flagrant disregard to our national security and the safety of our troops. Remove them from their positions and prosecute them for their crimes.
