Fiscal Responsibility Shouldn't Mean Food Insecurity

To: Rep. Kennedy, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Sandy, UT

March 24

I am writing to express my profound disappointment with the recent decision to cut government funding that helps provide food to needy and hungry Americans. As detailed in a recent CNN article, the impending halt of USDA deliveries to food banks is poised to exacerbate food insecurity across the country. This decision is not just disappointing; it is appalling, un-American, and entirely avoidable. There was one true mandate that led to President Trump's reelection: Americans were struggling economically under the Biden administration, with grocery prices skyrocketing beyond reason. People voted for change, hoping to see grocery prices and other essential goods become more affordable. However, instead of addressing these concerns, President Trump has made the situation far worse. His approach of picking fights with our allies and introducing tariffs has only driven prices higher, hurting average Americans. It is deeply frustrating to see promises of economic relief morph into policies that further strain the wallets of hard-working families. And now, as if rising costs were not enough, the administration is slashing funds for critical government agencies that help feed those in need. This is not making America great again; it is turning our nation into the land of the heartless. We should never be a country that stands idly by while our neighbors go hungry. To be clear, I am not opposed to examining government spending and finding ways to be more efficient. However, responsible governance means cutting with care, not with a hacksaw. Slashing essential services and hoping for a positive outcome is a reckless approach that only results in suffering. I urge you to stand up against these policies and fight for the well-being of your constituents. Please push back against these devastating cuts and advocate for a more thoughtful approach to fiscal responsibility. America is better than this. Thank you for your time and for your service to the people of Utah. I hope to see you take a stand against these harmful policies.
