I am deeply troubled by the Trump administration's unlawful deportation of Venezuelan immigrants without due process. Invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a wartime power, during peacetime to expedite the removal of over 200 Venezuelans is a blatant violation of their constitutional rights. The unlawfully deported people MUST be returned. The administration admitted one man was deported due to an "administrative error" and had protected status that was supposed to prevent him from being deported. Many of these individuals have no criminal record or ties to criminal organizations, yet they were detained and deported simply based on factors like their tattoos. The administration has defied a federal court order blocking this policy and continued handing over detainees to the notoriously dangerous CECOT prison in El Salvador, where families and attorneys have no way to locate or contact them. This disregard for due process and the rule of law sets a dangerous precedent and raises serious constitutional crisis concerns. I urge you to subpoena the responsible officials, investigate the unlawful detainment of innocent immigrants, and hold the administration accountable for their defiance of federal court orders. Protecting civil liberties and upholding the Constitution must be a top priority.
