More Concerns About President Trump’s Foreign Policy & Russia-Ukraine Stance

March 11
I am following up on my letter from March 1, in which I expressed deep concerns about President Trump’s foreign policy decisions that weaken NATO, hurt our allies, and embolden Vladimir Putin. That concern has only grown following the March 4 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, which confirmed that President Trump’s actions are advancing Russian interests at the expense of U.S. national security.
During this hearing, Senator Jeff Merkley confronted administration officials with five specific ways in which President Trump’s decisions align with Putin’s goals—spreading Kremlin propaganda, blocking Ukraine’s NATO path, cutting off military aid, undermining European partnerships, and publicly discrediting President Zelensky. When Merkley asked what more a Russian asset could do beyond what President Trump has already done, neither of President Trump’s nominees—Christopher Landau nor Matthew Whitaker—could provide a meaningful response. Instead, they dodged the question, refusing to defend the administration’s record.
This failure to refute the argument speaks volumes. If President Trump’s policies were truly serving U.S. interests, why couldn’t his own nominees make that case?
As my representative, do you believe President Trump’s approach to Ukraine and NATO strengthens or weakens America’s global leadership?
If you disagree with Merkley’s assessment, what specific evidence leads you to a different conclusion?
More importantly, given these concerns, what steps are you taking to ensure that U.S. foreign policy prioritizes our national security over Putin’s interests?
I look forward to your response.
