Trade policies prioritizing consumers' welfare over protectionism

To: Rep. Morelle

From: A constituent in Rochester, NY

March 10

Tariffs are being touted as a powerful bargaining tool, but their impact falls squarely on American consumers and the middle class. Historical evidence shows that protectionist trade policies tend to raise costs for everyday goods and services, eroding purchasing power for those already struggling to make ends meet. Rather than fueling economic growth, tariffs often spark retaliatory moves that disrupt industries and depress job creation. We need trade policies that prioritize the financial wellbeing of working families over the interests of a select few corporations. Turning away from punitive tariffs in favor of balanced, fact-based negotiations could open up new markets while shielding Americans from higher prices on necessities. An approach centered on consumers, not producers, would ultimately strengthen our economic standing.
