I am writing as a concerned constituent regarding the recent mass layoffs at the U.S. Department of Education that have severely weakened its Office for Civil Rights. The closure of regional offices and understaffing of OCR leave students—especially those with disabilities—vulnerable and unprotected. With over 22,600 civil rights complaints filed last year, predominantly concerning disability discrimination, these cuts reduce essential protections to nothing more than empty words.
This is not merely a bureaucratic adjustment; it is a decision that risks real children losing critical opportunities for an equitable education. I urge you to oppose these cuts and support strong federal enforcement of civil rights in education to ensure every student receives the services and protection they deserve.
