The economy of Ashtabula County is one focused on trade. As a northern border community frankly the tariffs adopted by President Trump are ruinous to us. The harbors of Ashtabula and Conneaut are going to see less shipping thanks to the tariffs. In the end, the tariffs have helped destroy a large part of the economy of an already economically depressed area of our great state. None of this has to happen and as I watch the stock market meltdown continue this morning I recognize that even the free market is calling the President out as a bullheaded monster with destructive intent. You have the power to stop this. You need to use your constitutional power to get the President to stop the senseless economic destruction. Failing that, it is time to perhaps entice the great deal maker into a great big deal such as giving up our Great Lakes shoreline counties to Canada so that he could build a beautiful northern wall to complement his southern one. In the end, the power is in your hands. It is time to act. As the President plays yet another round of golf our economy is on fire and you are all that is left of the fire brigade to put things right.
