Reject SB 120, preserve DEI in Georgia education

To: Sen. Halpern, Gov. Kemp, Rep. Willis

From: A verified voter in Atlanta, GA

March 5

SB 120 represents a concerning threat to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Georgia's public education system. These programs promote understanding, empathy, and a more equitable learning environment for all students. Banning them would undermine efforts to create an inclusive educational experience and could exacerbate societal divides. We all know Winston Churchill's famous quote "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" and as Georgians we cannot afford to make the same mistakes historically. We know better now, so we need to do better. DEI initiatives do not conflict with the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. Rather, they uphold its principles by acknowledging and addressing systemic barriers faced by underrepresented groups. They foster belonging, counter discrimination, and prepare students to thrive in an increasingly diverse world. Numerous studies demonstrate the benefits of DEI in education, including improved academic outcomes, increased critical thinking skills, and better preparation for the workforce. Graduates from institutions with robust DEI efforts are primed for success in our globalized society. Cutting funding to schools and universities that support DEI is an unjust overreach that could cripple their ability to serve all students equitably. I urge you to reject SB 120 and protect these vital programs that strengthen Georgia's education system and uphold constitutional values of equality. An investment in DEI is an investment in our state's future.
