I am writing to express my deep concern over the potential dismantling of the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan and the devastating impact this will have on millions of student loan borrowers, including myself. The SAVE Plan was designed to provide affordable repayment options by capping payments at a percentage of discretionary income and preventing interest from ballooning. Without this plan, many borrowers will be forced into significantly higher monthly payments, leading to financial hardship and potential default. I am currently enrolled in the SAVE Plan, and even with its lower payments, I struggle to afford my monthly bill. The lowest payment I could qualify for under an Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan would be over $100 more per month—an amount I simply cannot afford. I am not alone in this struggle. Many Americans rely on the SAVE Plan to keep their payments manageable while covering essential expenses like rent, utilities, and groceries. If this plan is taken away, countless borrowers will face financial distress, with some forced to choose between paying for basic necessities or making their student loan payments. Additionally, the disruption caused by dismantling the SAVE Plan will create chaos within the student loan system. Borrowers will be left scrambling for alternative repayment plans that may not provide the same level of relief. Many will face increased interest accrual, higher balances, and longer repayment terms, making it even more difficult to achieve financial stability. I urge you to take immediate action to protect the SAVE Plan and ensure that borrowers like myself are not pushed further into financial insecurity. Affordable repayment options are essential for millions of Americans who are doing their best to stay on top of their obligations while navigating an already challenging economic landscape.
