An Open Letter

To: Rep. Turner, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Dayton, OH

April 3

Please oppose cuts to the HUD workforce.  There is an accelerating homelessness crisis in our country, fueled by a shrinking inventory of affordable housing, escalating rent prices, and an increasing number of our family members, friends, and neighbors who are only one or two paychecks away from living in their cars or on the streets. Slashing HUD staffing and funding and walking away from the "Housing First" strategy first implemented in 2004 by George W. Bush will harm people and our communities.   In its place, Trump envisions a "Treatment First" strategy, whereby they will sweep up millions of people living on the streets, label them all with the stigmas of mental illness and substance abuse, and then relocate them in crowded remote tent camp "treatment centers" where they can be forgotten. If this reminds you of a mash-up of WWII Japanese-American internment camps and the 1975 film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," IT SHOULD! Please push back on the administration's heartless and inhumane plan to warehouse our fellow Americans whose misfortune was to fall into homelessness.
