Privatizing Amtrak would be detrimental to the national passenger rail system. Amtrak has successfully operated for over 50 years despite limited government funding, while privatization efforts elsewhere have faltered. The Northeast Corridor is the only segment covering operating costs, with long-distance routes relying on public funds. Past solicitations for private operators received little to no interest, as private entities would face the same constraints as Amtrak without its statutory rights. Privatization is unlikely to achieve the intended goals and could jeopardize vital transportation infrastructure. Maintaining Amtrak as a public entity ensures continued service across the country.
