Trump cancelling Columbia University’s grants violates 1st amendment rites

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Pres. Trump, Rep. Malagari, Rep. Dean, Sen. Collett, Gov. Shapiro

From: A constituent in Lansdale, PA

March 7

The Trump administration's decision to cancel $400 million in grants for Columbia University raises significant concerns about free speech protections under the First Amendment. While universities must address harassment and discrimination, penalizing an entire institution over protests could risk chilling free expression on campus. Columbia has pledged to work with the administration, but stripping funding over controversial speech sets a troubling precedent that could enable the government to financially pressure universities over unpopular viewpoints expressed by students or faculty. Protecting students from true threats and targeted harassment is essential, but this drastic funding cut appears to be an overreaction that undermines constitutionally-protected rights. A more measured approach that respects academic freedom while addressing specific conduct issues would better serve the interests of all students.
