Cease extralegal actions against students, restore due process

To: Sen. Young, Sen. Banks

From: A constituent in Lafayette, IN

March 28

The Trump administration's actions of detaining and attempting to deport legal visa-holding students without due process is deeply concerning. The report of armed agents ambushing and forcibly removing Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish Ph.D. student at Tufts University, from her home for co-authoring an opinion piece is a blatant violation of her constitutional rights to free speech. The fact that the administration is revoking visas en masse for foreign students who are critical of Israel's actions, without providing any evidence of wrongdoing or crimes committed, is an egregious overreach of power. No one should be subjected to such treatment for exercising their right to freedom of expression. Disappearing legal residents without cause or process undermines the fundamental principles of justice and fairness that are supposed to be upheld in this country. The chilling effect this will have on academic freedom and open discourse on college campuses is extremely concerning. I urge you to call for an immediate halt to these extralegal actions against students and a restoration of due process rights for all individuals legally residing in the United States. Protecting civil liberties should be a paramount priority.
