Defend Presidential Term Limits and Democratic Norms

To: Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Johnston, IA

March 31

The president's remarks about potentially serving a third term are extremely concerning and represent a direct threat to our democratic system of government. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits any person from being elected president more than twice, a crucial safeguard against any one individual accumulating excessive power. President Trump's dismissive attitude towards this foundational principle is alarming. His comments signal a willingness to violate the rule of law and undermine our nation's democratic traditions for his own political gain. No individual should be above the Constitution. It is imperative that all Americans, regardless of party affiliation, speak out forcefully against any efforts to circumvent or abolish presidential term limits. Safeguarding our democracy requires vigilant defense against authoritarianism and adherence to the Constitution that has governed our republic for over two centuries. I urge you to take a strong public stance rejecting these dangerous overtures from the president. Failing to do so would be enabling an unprecedented abuse of power. Our system of checks and balances depends on elected leaders upholding their sworn oaths to protect and defend the Constitution. The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of American democracy that must not be compromised. Please stand firm in defending our founding principles and the will of the people against any attempts at an anti-democratic power grab.
