The recent dismissals of the service judge advocates general (JAGs) and other top military legal officers raise grave concerns about upholding the rule of law and ensuring military operations remain within legal bounds. These senior JAGs play a crucial role in interpreting military law and providing guidance to commanders on complex legal issues, including the lawful use of force and compliance with international laws of armed conflict. Without their institutional knowledge and independent legal expertise, there is a heightened risk that orders or operations could violate domestic and international laws. This jeopardizes not only the integrity of the military justice system but also the reputation and standing of the U.S. armed forces globally. Maintaining apolitical and experienced legal advisors is essential to preserving military professionalism and preventing potential war crimes or other unlawful actions. We urge the administration to reconsider these dismissals and reinstate the service JAGs to safeguard the military's adherence to the law and its commitment to upholding democratic values and human rights. Ensuring lawful and ethical military conduct is vital for maintaining public trust, troop morale, and global partnerships. Protecting the rule of law must be a paramount priority.
