The threat by President Trump to pull funding from schools, colleges and universities that allow "illegal protests" is a direct assault on the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. Such a move would undermine core constitutional principles that are foundational to our democracy. The definition of what constitutes an "illegal protest" is vague and open to abuse, potentially stifling legitimate expressions of dissent on campuses. We must uphold the First Amendment and protect the rights of students, faculty and institutions to freely voice their views and air grievances through lawful protests. Revoking federal funds from educational institutions over this issue would be an unacceptable overreach that violates cherished civil liberties. I urge you to forcefully reject any efforts to curtail these fundamental freedoms through financial retaliation against schools.
