I am your constituent and I am writing to urge you to act in regard to the news that Citibank revealed in court filings on Wednesday that the FBI, the EPA, the EPA inspector general, and the Treasury Department have all requested that the bank freeze accounts of several nonprofits and state government agencies. The accounts were frozen in February, but the new documents make public details that had previously been unknown, including a full list of the nonprofits under FBI scrutiny. This continues a dangerous and unlawful precedent set by the Trump Administration of claiming work and topics not supported by the administration to be illegal or fraudulent. The funds given to these agencies were disbursed as part of the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which was created by the Inflation Reduction Act, a law passed by Congress in 2022. Of that, the EPA received $14 billion for a National Clean Investment Fund, which provides grants to green banks. These funds are given to support climate change initiatives, which are more important than ever. There is no evidence of fraud or misuse and the attempt to criminalize agencies for funding they received under an act of congress is despicable. Please do something. We can’t go on like this. Everything that is good, thoughtful and kind in the world is under attack. This isn’t who we are.
