I write to express grave concern over the disturbing pattern of deaths occurring at the Krome Detention Center while individuals are in ICE custody. The recent tragic passing of Maksym Chernyak, a Ukrainian man authorized to remain in the U.S. until 2026, has raised serious questions about the adequacy of medical care and overall conditions at the facility. According to reports, Mr. Chernyak began feeling ill but was allegedly denied proper medical attention until his condition had drastically deteriorated. This follows two other recent deaths at Krome, indicating a systemic failure to provide timely and appropriate healthcare to detainees. Such neglect is unacceptable and puts lives at risk. I urge you to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding these deaths and the protocols in place at Krome. Comprehensive reforms are needed to ensure the safety, dignity and human rights of all individuals detained are fully upheld. Preventable loss of life due to substandard conditions or negligent practices cannot be tolerated. Swift corrective action is paramount to prevent further tragedies from occurring at this facility or any other under ICE's oversight. The United States must adhere to the highest standards of humane treatment for all people in custody.
