Impose term limits on Iowa lawmakers and ban stock trading while in office
To: Gov. Reynolds, Sen. Petersen, Rep. Bagniewski
From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA
March 7
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my strong support for the recent legislative proposals introduced by State Senators Zach Wahls and Sarah Trone Garriott, which aim to impose term limits on lawmakers and ban stock trading while in office. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to consider backing these important measures and to take immediate steps toward addressing the growing concern of corruption within our legislature. The proposed term limits of 12 years for state lawmakers would help ensure that power does not become too deeply entrenched, preventing any single individual from holding a position for an extended period of time. This would open the door for fresh perspectives and encourage lawmakers to focus on the needs of their constituents, rather than becoming complacent in “safe seats.” Additionally, the proposed ban on stock trading by legislators is a much-needed safeguard to prevent personal financial interests from influencing the decision-making process. As citizens, we must be able to trust that our elected officials are serving the public good and not using their positions for personal gain. This legislation would go a long way in restoring integrity and accountability to our government. Iowa is facing critical issues, including the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and childcare, as well as concerns over cancer rates and the decline of rural communities. It is essential that our lawmakers focus on addressing these challenges, not allowing personal interests to undermine the work they were elected to do. As Senator Wahls has noted, the goal is to "serve the people of Iowa, not the special interests who help politicians get rich." I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment and urge you to stand with those working to bring true accountability and transparency to our state government. While I understand that the legislature has been under Republican control since 2017, I believe these proposals represent a bipartisan opportunity to prioritize the needs of the people over the interests of a few. I strongly encourage you to support these measures, take action to prevent corruption in our legislature, and work towards creating a government that truly serves the public. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and your commitment to supporting these vital reforms.
