I am writing to express my concern regarding the executive order you signed on March 12, 2025, which restricts the adoption of environmental regulations in Indiana that exceed federal standards. While I understand the importance of streamlining policies, this order poses significant risks to the people of Indiana and the environment we all share. First and foremost, this executive order undermines the well-being of Hoosiers by potentially rolling back crucial protections that ensure clean air, safe water, and healthy ecosystems. By limiting state agencies from adopting regulations stricter than federal standards, Indiana may weaken environmental safeguards that are already insufficient in addressing climate change, pollution, and habitat loss. The state must be able to enact regulations that go beyond federal requirements to tackle challenges unique to our region. Furthermore, environmental protections are directly tied to public health, quality of life, and economic resilience. Weakening these standards could result in long-term harm to the health of Indiana’s residents, particularly those in vulnerable communities near industrial sites. The rising costs of air and water pollution, as well as the broader impacts of climate change, will far outweigh any short-term business benefits from reduced regulations. The order also prioritizes the interests of large corporations and industries over the needs of everyday Hoosiers. It fails to recognize that a healthy environment is essential for a thriving economy. Clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and green technology are rapidly growing sectors, and Indiana has the opportunity to lead in these areas. Weakening environmental standards could cause the state to fall behind others that are taking proactive steps to address environmental challenges while driving economic growth. Additionally, this order risks undermining the expertise of Indiana’s environmental agencies, which work to balance economic interests with environmental protection. Requiring agencies to eliminate or revise regulations without clear scientific justification may endanger public health and the environment. The review process outlined in the order prioritizes industry interests over the long-term well-being of our citizens and environment. I urge you to reconsider this executive order and adopt policies that balance economic growth with robust, science-backed environmental protections. Indiana can lead in creating sustainable solutions that benefit both people and businesses, ensuring a healthy and prosperous future for all. We need leadership that prioritizes our health, environment, and future generations of Hoosiers. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical matter. I look forward to hearing your plan to address these concerns and move Indiana forward responsibly.
