Protect Educational Rights: Oppose Dismantling Department of Education

To: Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Wagner, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Saint Louis, MO

March 20

The proposed elimination of the Department of Education is a misguided and reckless move that would undermine educational opportunities for millions of students across the country. The Department plays a vital role in enforcing civil rights laws, overseeing student loans and grants, and ensuring equitable access to quality education, especially for disadvantaged communities. Dismantling it would jeopardize these critical functions and disproportionately harm low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and those in rural areas who rely on federal funding and oversight. Rather than abolishing the Department, we should be strengthening its ability to uphold educational standards, protect students' rights, and provide resources to schools in need. Education is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of our democracy. Dismantling the agency responsible for safeguarding this right would be a grave disservice to current and future generations of Americans. I urge you to oppose any efforts to eliminate the Department of Education and instead work towards reforms that expand educational opportunities and support for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. Investing in education is an investment in our nation's future, and we cannot afford to undermine this vital institution.
