The proposed elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services is concerning as it provides vital funding for libraries and museums across the country. Federal support from the IMLS awarded $266 million in grants last year alone, supporting essential services like workforce training, digital access, educational programs, and preserving cultural heritage. Cutting this modest 0.0046% of the federal budget would have an outsized negative impact, undermining the $50 billion that museums contribute to the economy. Libraries are crucial community hubs, especially in rural areas where they offer internet access and learning opportunities. Preserving federal funding for the IMLS is crucial to maintaining these valuable public resources that promote education, opportunity and our shared cultural legacy. I urge you to oppose efforts to defund this important agency and instead work to ensure robust support for libraries and museums nationwide.
