The Starbase One STEM program at Selfridge Air National Guard Base has been a vital resource for inspiring students in metro Detroit for over 30 years. With its hands-on learning experiences and unique facilities like a space shuttle simulator, it has sparked curiosity and passion in 1,800 students annually. The program's imminent closure due to a lack of federal funding from the Department of Defense is deeply concerning. I urge Congress to prioritize robust funding for Starbase programs nationwide to ensure this invaluable educational opportunity remains available. The proposed $60 million from the House is a worthy investment in cultivating the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Starbase's impact extends far beyond STEM subjects, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love of learning that shapes well-rounded individuals. Losing such an asset would be a disservice to our community and its future leaders. I implore you to advocate for the higher funding level to reopen and sustain Starbase One, providing transformative experiences that inspire young minds.
