I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, H.R. 22, which Congress is set to consider this week. This legislation poses serious threats to voting rights and risks disenfranchising millions of eligible Americans.
The SAVE Act would impose unnecessary barriers to voter registration by requiring documentary proof of citizenship, such as passports or birth certificates, which many Americans—especially people of color, low-income individuals, and elderly citizens—do not readily have access to. These requirements disproportionately harm vulnerable populations and create hurdles for those who are already lawfully eligible to vote.
Additionally, the bill would:
Eliminate mail-in and online voter registration systems, which millions of voters rely on for accessibility.
Mandate frequent voter purges based on unreliable data, risking the removal of legitimate voters from rolls.
Criminalize election workers for honest mistakes, deterring civic participation in election administration.
Existing laws already ensure that only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections, with strict penalties for violations. The SAVE Act is a solution in search of a problem that does not exist and undermines our democratic values by making it harder for eligible citizens to participate in elections.
I urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act and instead support efforts to expand access to voting and strengthen our democracy. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
