This administration's arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident, over constitutionally protected political speech represents an egregious violation of First Amendment rights and poses the gravest threat to free expression since the Red Scare era. Depriving individuals of due process and liberty based solely on their viewpoints is not only unconstitutional but strikes at the very heart of American democratic values. If lawfully present individuals can be arbitrarily detained for voicing dissent, it unleashes a dangerous precedent that endangers the rights of all citizens. This unacceptable overreach must be immediately reversed, and robust safeguards enacted to prevent any recurrence of such an assault on fundamental civil liberties that form the bedrock of our free society. Failure to do so irrevocably tarnishes the nation's credibility as a bastion of free speech and risks transforming it into the kind of repressive regime it has historically opposed.
