Segregation should not be an option

To: Sen. Kaine, Pres. Trump, Sen. Warner, Rep. Cline

From: A constituent in Roanoke, VA

March 20

Segregation has no place in our society, and it is alarming that the federal government has removed the explicit ban on segregated facilities from federal contracting rules. This provision has been in place since the 1960s as part of nationwide efforts to combat racial discrimination and promote integration. Allowing segregated facilities, even implicitly, is a regressive step that undermines hard-won civil rights victories and our nation's commitment to equality. We call on our representatives to take immediate action to reinstate an explicit prohibition against segregated facilities in all federal contracts. This discriminatory policy reversal must be rectified swiftly. Segregation perpetuates harm, divides communities, and flies in the face of our ideals as a nation of justice and equal opportunity for all. We cannot allow bigotry and injustice to regain a foothold through pernicious regulatory changes. Our government must lead by example and uphold the highest standards of inclusivity and human rights. The symbolism of removing this key anti-segregation clause carries profound implications. It signals a dangerous disregard for the lived experiences of marginalized groups who have endured systemic oppression. We have a moral imperative to reject segregation and discrimination outright. Our representatives must act decisively to enshrine non-discrimination protections and safeguard the American promise of liberty and justice for all.
