Dismantled Dept. of Education

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Randall

From: A constituent in Bremerton, WA

March 20

tRump wants to destroy the Dept. of Education: Add write 1. Destroy public education 2. Destabilize communities 3. Cut federal oversight over discrimination in schools 4. End vital student aid 5. Erase pathways to the middle class for millions of people 6. Further disadvantage students in under-resourced school districts The bad news: This EO will create even more chaos and confusion which will harm millions f students, teachers and families. All students—no matter where they live, how much their families earn, or their race, ethnicity, disability, or gender—benefit from the U.S. of Department of Education’s programs. The good news: While only Congress can abolish the U.S. Department of Education, we need them to step in now to stop this power grab! I tell you my story, I was born Deaf, in the 1960’s and 1970’s the education system was awful!! I enrolled in mainstreamed public school from kindergarten to 6th grade. When in kindergarten I was forbidden to use gestures, fingerspelling, and sign language trying to communicate, instead the teachers encouraged, well, demanded, or forced me how to talk, take speech therapies. I was taken out in the middle of class to be trained to say simple words. It is language deprivation. I struggled to communicate with my family, friends, teachers. I was a smart student, based on my speech, not my intelligence. Now, tRump wanted this kind of dismantling of education by going back to 1960’s and 1970’s!? Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
