Medicare nutrition CARES act
To: Rep. Gottheimer
From: A constituent in Englewood, NJ
April 1
The Nutrition CARE Act proposes an important reform to address gaps in Medicare coverage for seniors with eating disorders. By covering outpatient medical nutrition therapy through Medicare Part B, this bipartisan legislation ensures comprehensive treatment is available and accessible. Successful recovery from eating disorders requires a multi-faceted approach incorporating psychiatric, therapeutic, medical, and nutritional interventions. However, the current lack of coverage for specialized nutritional counseling leaves a critical component of care out of reach for many seniors. Nutrition therapy provided by registered dietitians is vital for managing the complex medical and psychological needs of those struggling with these severe mental illnesses. Expanding Medicare benefits to include this essential service brings federal policy in line with clinical best practices. It provides seniors and individuals with disabilities the support and resources they need to heal. By bridging this gap in coverage, the Nutrition CARE Act prioritizes affordable, quality care and facilitates long-term recovery for some of our most vulnerable populations.
