Now is the time to speak out against the treatment of Mahmoud Khalil. His being detained with the possibility of having his legal status revoked as punishment for protesting is a direct threat to all of our first amendment rights. Further, the “measured” response I have seen from Sen. Schumer has me more worried than ever. This is the fascism playbook, and decorum is fascism’s best friend. We can’t let this event set a new precedent for the executive branch. They must be stopped, no matter how “uncivil” we have to get to be successful. The rights of all Americans are at stake with every destructive action we let slide.
