An Open Letter

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer, Rep. Stefanik

From: A constituent in Lake Placid, NY

March 29

The Trump administration's decision to remove the nonbinary gender option from the FAFSA form is discriminatory and harmful to LGBTQ+ students. Nonbinary individuals exist, and denying them the ability to accurately self-identify perpetuates stigma and marginalization. This change will create unnecessary barriers for nonbinary students seeking financial aid for higher education. As constituents, we urge you to take action to protect the rights and wellbeing of nonbinary youth. This regressive policy must be swiftly reversed to uphold principles of equity and inclusion in education. Nonbinary students deserve to be recognized and supported, not erased from essential processes like the FAFSA. We call on you to denounce this discriminatory decision and work to reinstate the nonbinary option on the FAFSA form. Defending the rights of LGBTQ+ citizens, especially vulnerable youth, should be a priority. Take a stand against this unjust policy that targets a marginalized group.
