Please Amend Senate Bill 1 to Protect Ohio’s Higher Education System
To: Sen. Liston, Rep. Lett
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
March 17
No I appreciate your time and attention to the concerns I’ve previously shared regarding education in Ohio. I’m reaching out now about Senate Bill 1, which I believe needs critical amendments to protect both educators and students.
Specifically, SB 1 threatens union rights, academic freedom, tenure, and other job protections that ensure Ohio can attract and retain high-quality faculty. Weakening these protections could discourage talented educators from staying in or coming to Ohio, ultimately harming students and the institutions that serve them.
Additionally, the bill puts scholarships and programs for underrepresented students at risk. These initiatives provide opportunities that strengthen Ohio’s workforce and economy. Removing them would limit students’ ability to succeed and compete in an increasingly diverse job market.
I urge you to push for amendments that protect these essential elements of Ohio’s higher education system before this bill moves forward. Our colleges and universities should remain places where educators can teach and research freely, and where students from all backgrounds have access to opportunity.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
