I am writing again to express my shock at Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team drastically cutting jobs and funding at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including the National Weather Service.
NOAA’s data and modeling are the foundation of weather forecasting in the U.S., including hurricane prediction and tornado watches and warnings. Without those warnings, Americans will die needlessly.
This is especially true here in Texas, where we face hurricanes and tornados on a regular basis. Without those warnings, Texans will die needlessly.
These indiscriminate cuts will negatively impact our county’s economy. Local weather forecasts will be less accurate. A weakened NOAA puts our military, and our national security, at higher risk.
Musk and his young team have no authority to make these life-and-death decisions. Musk is an unelected private citizen, neither vetted nor appointed by Congress. Yet these haphazard cuts by him and his DOGE’s ignorant staff put millions of Americans in danger and threaten many Texan’s livelihoods.
My wife and I urge you to reclaim your Congressional authority and block these cuts to NOAA staffing rather than continue to abdicate your power to shortsighted youths and their megalomaniac ‘director.’ American lives, Texas lives, depend on that.
