The president's plans to eliminate thousands of Social Security Administration positions and close numerous field offices through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) present a grave threat to Social Security. This proposal amounts to a backdoor attempt to undermine and dismantle this vital social program that millions of Americans rely upon for their retirement income. Social Security is a federal entitlement program established by Congress, and any substantive changes to its structure or funding should be decided through the legislative process, not by unilateral executive action. The president lacks the legal authority to make sweeping changes that could jeopardize the financial security of current and future beneficiaries. This assault on Social Security's administrative capacity would severely impair the agency's ability to process claims, provide customer service, and ensure the accurate and timely delivery of benefits. Cutting staff and closing offices will only exacerbate existing backlogs and processing delays, causing significant hardship for vulnerable populations dependent on these essential payments. Any proposals to reform Social Security must go through proper congressional channels and be subject to robust public debate, not pursued through bureaucratic maneuvers that undermine its core mission. I urge you to reject these misguided plans and instead work to strengthen and protect Social Security for current and future generations of Americans who have paid into the system their entire working lives.
