Oppose proposed HB2009

To: Sen. Chapman, Sen. Weld, Del. Willis, Gov. Morrisey

From: A constituent in Wellsburg, WV

March 5

Dear Representative, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed bill that seeks to reclassify public libraries under the Tourism department. As a dedicated supporter of public libraries and their essential role in our communities, I am deeply concerned about the potential negative impacts of this legislation. Public libraries are not merely tourist attractions; they are vital community hubs that provide access to information, educational resources, and a wide range of services that support lifelong learning and community engagement. Rehousing libraries under the Tourism department could lead to a shift in priorities and resources that may undermine their fundamental mission. Specifically, I am concerned about the following potential consequences: Funding and Resources: Libraries may face uncertain funding tied to tourism performance, which can be unpredictable. This could jeopardize the stability and availability of essential library services. Focus and Priorities: The tourism sector's goals may not align with the educational and community-focused objectives of libraries. This misalignment could result in a reduction of programs and services that benefit local residents. Management and Staffing: Emphasizing tourist attractions over community services could impact the management and staffing of libraries, potentially leading to a decrease in the quality and variety of programs offered. Public Perception: Reclassifying libraries as part of the tourism sector could alter public perception and diminish their role as educational and community institutions. Legislative Concerns: New regulations or requirements imposed by the tourism department could create additional burdens for libraries, further complicating their operations. Public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, providing free access to knowledge, fostering a love of reading, and offering a safe space for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. It is crucial that we preserve their autonomy and ensure they continue to receive the support and resources necessary to fulfill their mission. I urge you to oppose this bill and advocate for the continued independence and support of our public libraries. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
