I am staunchly opposed to LB3, which seeks to dismantle Nebraska's unique split electoral vote system in presidential elections. This system has served our state well for over 30 years by ensuring every Nebraskan's voice is heard and encouraging presidential candidates to campaign here. Eliminating it would make our state less competitive, less relevant, and less reflective of the diverse views of rural and urban Nebraskans. The split electoral vote system respects the will of Nebraska voters across the entire state. Scrapping it in favor of a winner-take-all approach would silence many Nebraskans and concentrate all our electoral power in whoever wins the statewide popular vote, disenfranchising everyone else. This is fundamentally undemocratic and antithetical to our values of fair representation. Furthermore, Nebraskans have clearly and overwhelmingly voiced their opposition to LB3 through activism and public testimony. As our elected representatives, you have a duty to listen to your constituents over partisan national interests. Advancing this bill would be a dereliction of that duty. I implore you to respect the will of the people, defend our electoral system's integrity, and vote no on LB3 in committee. Our state's legacy of robust civic engagement and fair elections is at stake.
