Reject unconstitutional executive overreach endangering public protections

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Liccardo

From: A constituent in Pacifica, CA

April 1

This executive order represents a disturbing erosion of constitutional checks and balances and the principles of separation of powers. By stripping away the independence of regulatory agencies like the SEC and FTC, it concentrates immense power in the hands of the president and unelected OMB officials. This threatens to undermine essential consumer, worker, and environmental protections that agencies have been empowered by Congress to enforce. The independence of these agencies is vital to preventing regulatory capture by corporate interests and ensuring impartial oversight in the public interest. Subjecting all their rules and enforcement actions to the whims of the White House political appointees opens the door to corruption, cronyism, and the prioritization of profits over people. This order is a blatant power grab that undermines the constitutional role of Congress in creating these agencies and setting their mandates. It sets a dangerous precedent of expanding unchecked executive authority in defiance of the system of checks and balances. We cannot stand by as core tenets of our democratic system are callously disregarded. I urge you to forcefully reject this unconstitutional executive overreach and work to restore the institutional safeguards that protect the public good.
