French Senator Claude Malhuret’s recent speech is a dire warning about the consequences of America’s retreat from global leadership. He described Washington as “the court of Nero, an incendiary emperor,” condemning the chaos that has replaced responsible governance (The Atlantic, March 2025). He also warned that Trump’s foreign policy signals to allies that “there is no point in being his ally since he will not defend you,” undermining decades of trust and diplomatic stability (The Atlantic, March 2025).
Malhuret is clear: abandoning Ukraine strengthens Russia and emboldens authoritarian regimes worldwide. He cautions that China is likely accelerating its plans for Taiwan, knowing the U.S. under Trump is unpredictable and weak on defending democracy (The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, March 2025). As Europe begins to prepare for a future without reliable American leadership, our global influence is collapsing in real time.
For too long, my Republican senators have ignored these warnings, excusing Trump’s reckless policies. That is why I am now calling on you—my governor, state legislators, and other elected officials—to take a stand. America’s credibility is in freefall, and history will remember who chose to act and who remained silent.
I urge you to speak out against Trump’s abandonment of our allies and his weakening of global democracy. Call on Congress to reinstate full military and intelligence support for Ukraine. Publicly reaffirm our commitments to NATO and international security. If Republican leaders in Washington refuse to act, then state officials must step up and defend American values. The time to act is now—before it is too late.
