Speak out against cuts to IMLS

To: Sen. Blackburn, Rep. Burchett, Sen. Hagerty

From: A constituent in Corryton, TN

March 19

Libraries are Essential to Our Communities I am writing to express strong concerns over the March 14 Executive Order targeting the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Protecting this essential agency is critical to preserving the vital role libraries play in education, the economy, and community infrastructure across the country. The IMLS provides critical support and funding for libraries, museums, and related organizations nationwide. Its programs strengthen education, preserve cultural heritage, fuel economic development through tourism and jobs, and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all Americans. Cutting or eliminating IMLS would devastate these essential institutions that serve communities in every state and congressional district. Personally, our community library has been a source of enrichment, excitement around literacy, and a staple for my children. I use the Libby app daily to read books that I would otherwise be unable to access. Given the struggles we are battling with childhood literacy in the state of Tennessee, defunding our libraries would be a massive blow to student proficiency. I urge you to speak up to the Administration and prevent them from moving forward with this damaging approach. We must ensure continued robust funding for IMLS to safeguard the invaluable contributions of libraries and museums to our society.
