I am urging an immediate arms embargo on Israel in response to Israel’s rejection of phase two of the ceasefire, resulting in a horrific assault on Gaza that has killed hundreds of Palestinians, including many children. The Israeli government's disproportionate use of force and targeting of civilians violates international law and basic human rights. Continuing to provide military aid enables these war crimes and the oppression of the Palestinian people. Israel has repeatedly violated ceasefire agreements and imposed a cruel blockade, depriving Palestinians of food, water, electricity and medical care - using starvation as a weapon of war. This latest bombardment destroyed Gaza's only cancer hospital, exemplifying the indiscriminate nature of the attacks. An international arms embargo is a crucial step to pressure Israel to end its illegal occupation, lift the Gaza blockade, and pursue a just and lasting peace. The United States cannot continue arming and funding this apartheid regime as it murders civilians and commits what UN experts have described as "genocidal acts." Immediate action through an arms embargo is imperative to uphold human rights and promote a resolution to this decades-long conflict. Israel's assault on Gaza underscores the moral and legal necessity of halting all military assistance until it adheres to international law and respects Palestinian human rights.
