It is by now clear that we are in a constitutional crisis. In the 20th century, a German leader who spearheaded a failed coup but later gained office was successful in consolidating power and outlawing opposing parties in less than 2 months. Now, in the 21st century, the current administration has purged the military, defied the judiciary, and apparently rendered even the Democrats in Congress impotent. The rhyme of history is deafening.
Today, we know that he had simply not yet expressed his violent expansionist impulses. He and his administration are shaming our allies, threatening our friends, and threatening the annexation of our neighbors. Trump is threatening genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and siding with those who take territory by violence.
You can and must stand against him and this corrupt regime. The time to oppose him is running out and you will be viewed as complicit in the atrocities to come. I know it must feel dangerous and certainly political success is unclear. Yet you must demonstrate courage and be marked in history as those who stood for the people of America against the violence, hatred, and evil of the Putin-puppet presidency.
If, in this moment of crisis, you believe you can hold to your status and life, you are gravely mistaken. You will not, by your inaction, save anything you value. The only way to preserve what matters is to dare greatly for what is right.
If you would be a leader, now is the time. The American people stand ready to back you if you will stand for what is good. Schumer's calculus has not worked to thwart Trumpian machinations in the past and it will not work now. Rally those who remain Americans regardless of party and put an end to the lawlessness of the current president before it is too late.
