The tariffs enacted by President Trump yesterday are the largest tax increase on the American working class since at least World War II and, potentially, the largest since 1913.
I am deeply dismayed by this large increase in a federal consumption tax that was designed to offer small scale support for industries during times of crisis.
This tariff policy will do one of two things. It will either force Americans into lower-paying manufacturing jobs that are created along existing supply lines (this will do nothing to help small communities that have already been left behind) or it will be a massive tax increase for the working class offset by income tax cuts that will disproportionately benefit the wealthy.
I urge you all in your spots in congress to reign in this policy and enact legislation that removes the presidents ability to create large scale tax changes like this. Congress is article one of the constitution for a reason. The founding fathers saw you all as the most important branch. Act like it and stop the President from enacting massive tax increases unilaterally.
