I’m writing because I understand that President Trump signed an executive order today calling for the dismantling of the U.S. Education Department. I am sick over this, but I’m also angry. Trump doesn’t have the authority to eliminate the Department of Education. The department is created by statute; changing a statute requires approval from Congress. So what are you doing to take your power back and protect this department? I’m sick of seeing Congress cede their power in these decisions. We have a Constitution. We have a system of laws. Congress needs to take its power back, protect our institutions, and protect public education, about which I care very deeply. I was also dismayed to learn that DOGE raided IMLS today. Libraries, museums and archives are the memory, heart and soul of our country and IMLS provides critical support to them. It must be saved! Please use your power to save it!
