Reject discriminatory Senate Bill 516, protect LGBTQ+ rights

To: Sen. Everitt, Rep. Cohn, Gov. Stein

From: A constituent in Oxford, NC

March 29

I understand the concerns surrounding Senate Bill 516, also known as the "Women's Safety and Protection Act". However, this bill raises troubling issues regarding discrimination against transgender individuals. Denying people the ability to update their identity documents and driver's licenses to reflect their lived gender could lead to harassment, invasions of privacy, and violence. Furthermore, the bill appears to target LGBTQ+ rights more broadly by proposing restrictions around gender definitions and identities. While the stated intent may be to address safety considerations, this legislation promotes harmful stereotypes and marginalizes an already vulnerable community. I urge you to reject this discriminatory bill and instead focus efforts on promoting inclusivity, equal rights, and protecting all North Carolina residents from violence and discrimination, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. There are more constructive ways to enhance public safety that do not come at the expense of civil liberties and human rights. Vote no to sb516!
