I am writing to urge you to reject the SAVE Act, which imposes unnecessary and burdensome citizenship documentation requirements that could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. This bill is a solution in search of a problem—one that will disproportionately harm women, seniors, low-income Americans, and communities that already face barriers to voting.
Federal law already makes it illegal for non-citizens to register or vote in federal elections (18 U.S.C. § 1015), and election officials already use extensive state and federal databases to verify voter eligibility. The SAVE Act does nothing to improve election security—it simply makes it harder for lawful citizens to vote.
Under this bill:
- Millions of longtime voters—including married women who have legally changed their last names—could be purged from voter rolls.
- Seniors, low-income individuals, and rural voters could face insurmountable barriers to obtaining required documents like birth certificates or passports.
- Lawfully registered voters who have participated in elections for decades could suddenly find themselves shut out of the democratic process.
This is voter suppression at its worst—a blatant attempt to make voting harder, not safer. Instead of restricting access to the ballot box, Congress should be working to expand voting rights, ensure secure elections, and protect democracy for all Americans.
I urge you to stand against this dangerous and anti-democratic legislation. Protecting access to the ballot for all eligible voters should be the priority—not imposing arbitrary hurdles that disproportionately impact women and underserved communities.
The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. Do not let it be weakened by legislation that serves no legitimate purpose other than to disenfranchise the very people you were elected to represent.
