An Open Letter

To: Rep. Cline, Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

From: A constituent in Roanoke, VA

April 1

The recent security breach involving top Trump administration officials discussing sensitive military operations over an insecure messaging app is deeply concerning and demonstrates a dangerous level of incompetence when it comes to safeguarding national security information. According to reports, personal details and even passwords of officials like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard were found online and vulnerable to exploitation by hostile actors. Sharing details of pending bombings and military operations over a public app like Signal, which can be easily hacked, needlessly jeopardizes operations and risks American lives. Officials who fail to follow basic security protocols for handling classified information are unfit for roles with access to our nation's most sensitive data and should be relieved of their duties immediately. National security demands utmost diligence and care from those entrusted with guarding state secrets, not the cavalier attitude displayed here. Decisive action must be taken to uphold standards and ensure those unable or unwilling to properly secure sensitive information do not remain in positions where such negligence can continue to undermine operations and American interests.
