Staff Cuts to Valley Forge National Park

To: Rep. Houlahan, Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A constituent in Phoenixville, PA

March 22

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent staff cuts at Valley Forge National Historical Park, particularly the termination of five key employees on February 14, 2025. These individuals, labeled as "probationary employees," were well-qualified and made significant contributions to vital restoration and operational improvement projects funded by the Great American Outdoors Act. The abrupt decision to terminate these dedicated staff members undermines the value of our national parks and raises serious questions about the current administration's commitment to preserving our national heritage. Valley Forge National Historical Park plays a crucial role in supporting the local economy, contributing to over 400 jobs in the area. The loss of these employees jeopardizes the park's operational effectiveness and its ability to continue serving the community and visitors alike. Employees like historical architect Jessica Malarik Fair and archives technician Heather demonstrated unwavering dedication to enhancing park facilities and enriching visitor experiences. The management's compassionate approach in delivering termination news personally does not mitigate the harshness of their dismissal, which occurred without thorough evaluation or warning. The broader implications of these cuts extend beyond Valley Forge, highlighting a concerning trend within the National Park Service that threatens the integrity and sustainability of our cherished parks. It is essential that we prioritize the stability of our workforce and ensure adequate funding for our national parks. Therefore, I respectfully request the following: The immediate reinstatement of the terminated staff at Valley Forge National Historical Park. A comprehensive review of staffing decisions within the National Park Service. Increased funding for national parks to ensure their preservation and operational success. By taking these actions, we can safeguard our national treasures and support the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to maintain them. Together, we can ensure that our parks thrive for future generations, reflecting the value we place on these vital cultural and natural resources. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
