Stop Wasting ICE Resources on Law-Abiding Families
To: Rep. Bergman
From: A verified voter in Marquette, MI
March 20
I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent deportation of Nelson and Gladys Gonzalez, a law-abiding couple who lived in the U.S. for 35 years with no criminal record. Their removal raises serious questions about misplaced immigration enforcement priorities that waste taxpayer dollars and fail to serve the interests of law and order.
ICE resources should be focused on removing individuals who actually pose a threat to public safety, not breaking up families who have lived here peacefully for decades. The Gonzalezes were not criminals, gang members, or national security threats. So why were they a priority for deportation?
Even more troubling is how they were detained—during a routine check-in with ICE, a process they voluntarily complied with. This sends a terrible message: instead of encouraging people to follow the system’s requirements, we punish them for doing so. That’s a wasteful, inefficient, and counterproductive approach to immigration enforcement.
As a fiscal conservative who believes in efficient use of government resources, I ask that you:
✔ Call on DHS/ICE to focus on real threats, not law-abiding families.
✔ Push for immigration enforcement that prioritizes criminals, not people contributing to society.
✔ Support measures that protect family unity and deter unnecessary government overreach.
I hope to see your leadership in ensuring that our immigration enforcement policies reflect common sense and fiscal responsibility. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
