Mahmoud Khalid’s unjust arrest trrrifies me as an American. I am afraid, as an American-born citizen, of exercising my first amendment rights and protesting the government. I am afraid that my friends and colleagues, legal immigrants, will have their rights stripped away and be unjustly arrested and detained. I am afraid for my rights as an American traveling abroad, that now other countries will use reciprocal tactics against me, as punishment how the U.S. has treated their citizens (including those from Germany and the U.K.)
The detention of Mahmoud Khalil by ICE is a violation of the rule of law and due process. Khalil has been charged with no offense.
The free flow of ideas, information, people, and travel is Americas strength. We are becoming weaker by the day.
If you let due process and the rule of law be overturned for Mahmoud Khalil, who will be next?
Hold hearings and bring ICE agents in to answer questions under oath.
Make additional funding for ICE contingent on accountability and legality.
