Protect educational equity, safeguard underserved student interests

To: Rep. Landsman, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Cincinnati, OH

March 20

The president's plan to dismantle the Education Department while retaining certain core functions is concerning and risks undermining equal access to quality education nationwide. The department plays a vital role in enforcing civil rights protections, providing supplemental funding for vulnerable student populations like those from low-income families, students with disabilities, and homeless youth. Dismantling it without a comprehensive strategy to uphold these critical responsibilities could jeopardize educational opportunities and exacerbate inequalities. Policymakers must ensure any restructuring maintains a strong federal commitment to educational equity and safeguards the interests of all students, especially those from underserved communities.
