Protect independence of Department of Justice from partisan interference

To: Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Johnston, IA

April 3

The recent firings of career prosecutors at the Department of Justice by the White House is deeply concerning and represents a dangerous escalation of partisan interference that undermines the independence and integrity of our justice system. Removing experienced, non-partisan lawyers without due process solely for perceived political allegiances is an abuse of power that prioritizes loyalty over the rule of law. Maintaining an apolitical justice department insulated from undue political influence is essential for upholding equal justice under the law for all citizens. Dismissing skilled prosecutors for reasons unrelated to professional conduct erodes public trust in the impartial administration of justice. This violates long-standing norms and principles established to prevent the justice system from becoming a political weapon. We must reject these alarming actions that inject partisan politics into law enforcement activities. The Justice Department should operate free from improper White House meddling, with its staffing decisions based solely on merit and ethics, not political vendettas or ideological allegiance tests. Preserving the independence of our legal institutions is vital for safeguarding the democratic ideals of checks and balances enshrined in our Constitution.
